WATER GAP STATION INFORMATION SYNOPSIS

BUILT:     1903-1904, by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, and opened for service on April 28, 1904

USED BY:     The DL&W RR and The Pennsylvania Railroad

PEAK YEARS:     1910-1930. Up to two thousand people a day in the peak travel season

LAST RAIL USE:     September 27, 1953

SUBSEQUENT USE:     Boy Scouts, DWG Borough maintenance and storage facility

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE:     It was an expensively built and architecturally significant "gateway" station to the Pocono resort industry in the time
before practical road travel, and as such was instrumental in the development of the Pocono region tourist infrastructure    

STATUS:     Placed in the National Register of Historic Places on November 27, 2002

LEASED:     January, 1999, to the Lackawanna Chapter, R&LHS

GOAL:     The restoration and development of the station and its original riverside park site for chapter and public use, to stimulate the local economy
and the northeast Pennsylvania tourist infrastructure

TIME FRAME:     Progress contingent on funding success. Exterior renovation estimated at nine months after start up

COST ESTIMATES: Exterior restoration - $660,000.  Interior restoration - $350,000 (approximately)

POTENTIAL USES:     Museum, indoor-outdoor civic meeting facility, park and outdoor recreation site, hiking trails connector. Host site for cultural    events and learning facility. DWG Trolley Tour stop, and tourist train and weekend railroad stop
